Cook Co. periodically (every 3-4 years) puts our a pre-application which individuals can fill out and send it. This "pre-application", as I understand it, then secures a person a spot on the waiting list. The actual waiting list can be many months to many years before a person is then sent a formal application packet. At which time, they can fill out the packet, and if accepted, they are able to get a Sec 8 certificate for low income housing (rent is set at 1/3 a persons income, no matter what the income is).
Thought this certainly is not a "quick fix" for someone's perm. housing needs, it at least gets your name on the waiting list. And, like the Lottery says, "you can't win if you don't play."
The North/Northwest Suburban Task Force on Supportive Housing for Individuals with Mental Illness is working to provide permanent supporting housing for individuals with mental illness.
As part of the project, they are conducting a market survey to ask people with mental illness, family members and other supporters, and mental health professionals about the housing needs of the potential clients.
You can help this initiative by taking a brief online survey. It will only take a few minutes of your time and is strictly confidential.
